ABOUT US

Kutus Autism Centre is a brand new centre offering support to autistic children and their families

Imagine being a child born with autism in Kenya, where resources are scarce and support is virtually non-existent. Sadly, this is the reality for many children in the Mount Kenya region. With limited access to services and a lack of accurate diagnosis, these children and their families face immense challenges every day.

But amidst these struggles, there’s a ray of hope: the new Kutus Autism Centre. Created through a partnership between Throw A Starfish in the UK and the Health Charge Medical Centre in Kenya, this centre is a lifeline for autistic children and their families. It’s a beacon of local, affordable, and accessible support, aiming to fill the void in services and provide much-needed assistance.

The centre will offer a range of affordable therapies, crucial training for families and caregivers, and, in time, improved diagnostic capabilities. It’s a game-changer for the region, bringing essential services closer to home and offering a path to a brighter future for these children

Our Partners

Training

At Kutus Autism Centre we offer the following training

Individual training for parents and caregivers on how to understand and support their autistic child, tailored to their own situation 

Training health care professionals to recognise the early signs of autism and refer early for screening and possible diagnosis

Two free one-year practical placements for speech therapists with mentoring support.  Board and pocket money provided.  This is an amazing opportunity to gain practical support, working with a qualified Speech and Language therapist, and may lead to a full time job,

Education

At Kutus Autism Centre we run

A two hour seminar to help parents, or anyone interested, to better understand what autism is, its causes, and how to support an autistic child, dispelling the many myths circulating in the wider community.

Seminars aim to be accessible to all and will avoid complicated medical terms

For Autistic Children

Costs of Therapy
45 mins Speech theray Ksh 1500
30 mins speech therapy Ksh 1000

Where this cost would be prohibitive, subsidies may be available to bring down the cost to as little as Ksh100.

Diagnosis

At Kutus Autism Centre

We hope to soon be able to offer affordable, reliable, autism screening and full diagnosis. The earlier a child is diagnosed the better the potential outcome.  We would normally aim to diagnose between 30 and 42 months
